I loved you more than a field full of ponies set for an orphan girl on her sixth birthday.
I tried so hard to tell you not to love me, but you went and told me anyway...
That you remembered. That we'd been in love, since that first time we talked, hopeless romantics. They're good with spells. They write it well. Like secret kings, invisible queens, a breath of life...We told each other we were glad we lived far away and we meant it. And on the balcony that day, I couldn't find it in me to scoot an inch closer to you...We were almost in love forever.
I told you to toss me the joint and you did. You told me you felt like a little kid, like a teenager in love. I didn't know how old you were but we were both old enough to believe you.
You told me I was the most beautiful girl you'd ever seen. I hesitated then still believed you. You asked me if I was going to cry. I said, No. Why?
And I told you, you were my favorite person I had ever met.
You asked me if I was a romantic person. I tried to lie and tell you no. You said, "well I am.' Then I confessed, "I know.'
I tell you every time. I fall harder. I push away. I don't want to know you at all. You're too fucking perfect! You're not even tall. You're not even cruel, or tattered, or dumb. With your tattoos and stories for each one. And how you loved your children, and ex lovers, and love and life. And how you did not ask permission and permitted no wife. You were my fucking hero. You were my fucking hero!
I told you that first day in your black truck. It was winded out but we weren't stuck. We were getting high like black blood rebels. Like the cool cowboys we were. I said " Do me a favor. Don't touch me, so we can always be in love."
...No. I hadn't felt a thing a thing in years. You had me out borrowing and begging for tears. I think I sniffed up all the drugs as the fools and strippers gave me hugs....
And when we walked, we agreed, it wouldn't last forever, and that just made it better. But it had nothing to do with brevity. But You. Intuitive. Urgency.
We were two hopeless romantics regarded highly, well traveled, impossible to obtain. We were madly in love. My fucking hero. I told you not to touch me. I needed to know you so badly. I asked you honestly, "When are you leaving me?"
Hopeless Romantic. You figured out how to be in love forever.
Goddammit I'm going to miss you.
I'll love you forever.

My love, you lazy dreamer
You’re future’s stark yet bright baby, you’re an angel.
My head sank lower and said “ No, but I’m not”
I tried to hide a smile but I’d been caught
My delight eclipsed by severe tragedy
A memory strikes me now as funny
Myself, a child picturing now, just the way I am
But, I thought I had a great imagination
And the dreams I knew were all my own
What tortuous act, creation
Like fire does destroy all in it’s path
I took a chance and did not look back
The road seemed simple as I approached
Then destitute coldness soon encroached
Believe me baby, you’re an angel
I’m tired, but I will move on
Sing, sweet lover do not fail yourself
All I have in me is a song
Life, listless, too determined
Just to prove the probable fact
That once you’ve been lit, my love
You’re a rocket, no turning back

New York, one day, I'm gonna leave you. I just wish it could be now.
New York, you seductive devil, how I wish I could leave you now. Days after the hurricane and after being nestled warm, shut in my apartment for a week, the thought of braving the cold, then braving the subway shuttle, subway shuttle to the shuttle bus to God, I hope I can catch a cab, only to go man an empty, lifeless Western themed bar near West 4th, terrifies me. Subways aren't going here today, we've been closed for a week. I know before I get there I won't be making any money. In the restaurant industry, everyone always has a reason why it's slow. "Oh you know, it only gets really busy here in the Winter. All the folks are out of town for the Summer." But honestly, who the fuck prefers enduring the cold? I suppose it's because New York City is built for the indoors. Unfortunately, I am not.
I pause now for a moment from writing, to pack me and my lovers laundry into a large tote that can only be carried with both arms, to walk it down the street, then down one more dark block in Bushwick, Brooklyn to start our laundry. I've put this off all day, because I'm scared. I wish I had a car. A washer and dryer. Are my domestic brain cells finally developing as a result of being engaged. Or am I just starting to realize how primitive and bleak this urban dream has become.
Not to be mistaken or taken to mock the recent plight of my neighbors, the homes shifted by misplaced water, entire trees that caved in the roofs of cars of hardworking family people, those left in the dark, cold without power, those dead by stroke of chance, by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I know not of this pure despair, but despair is the tide of the times. I have, been without work for a week, so has my fiancee. We will again, be very late on rent, being that we live on a pay, only day to day, left with a few twenties to spare that we call savings for a wedding, a van for touring, better gear. I testify, however, to longing.
I laid in bed all day today, if my friend from the burlesque world calls to say I have a ride to Coney Island to help clean up, I'll go. Til then, I'll remain here. In bed, where Chris left me and my cat. Waiting, drifting in and out of sleep, no calls, no text, my phone dies and I don't move to plug it back in. I know I must get up at some point today to do the laundry before the laundromat closes, so I won't feel like a complete and total failure.
...You ever notice how the more times you hit snooze, the longer you sleep, the more times you wake up and decide to go back to sleep again, the more, wild, ridiculous, and evil your dreams become. Wrong sexual arrangements, seem vivid and normal, the worst seems to come alive as you move lucidly through your worst nightmares. Things you're even ashamed of in the privacy of your own mind. And these nightmares begin to ware on you and even reel you into their brand new themes and colors. Suddenly these strange apparitions could become more desirable, than the nothingness that surrounds you in the mortal realm. For, there you've become a breathing carcass on which the flies that have infested your home, come to rest and vomit. Why wake up now. To do laundry, I suppose. To make a nice boy proud, to feed your cats...
I don't have winter clothes. This is my third New York Winter and I still haven't accepted it. This morning, I opt to wear Chris's thermal. Something that probably cost all of $5, I could've bought my own anytime from then to now, but I haven't. I have three pairs of pants, one of which the zipper is broken and I hope nobody notices. I tell myself often this is temporary. But how many east coast winters will it take to acquire winter clothes.
...I remember, smoking joints in a cave in La Jolla, yards away from the lightly crashing waves, looking onto a sunset, passing around a bottle of Champagne, on a Wednesday of no note. I remember campfires among friends, telling stories, laughing hard, staying up til dawn, outside in an orchard. Driving through the redwood forest, winding roads, to have a picnic, to smoke from an apple. The vastness of Tennessee, it's rolling hills, passive snow, then crisp light air, green grass and orange leaves. The PCH. I miss you and I love you...
The other bartender brings friends in last night to help fill up the hollow bar. "Why don't you tell your friends to come in?" The third bartender asks me.
"I would, but, I don't have any friends. And my fiance is at work too." I respond with grave honesty, somehow with a smile.
Sometimes, as a bartender, to get a customer to stay (if they are at the bar by themselves), you have to expose a little more of yourself much faster than you usually would in a normal social situation. Whoring your soul out, for a few more dollars, and because, you too, are very bored and want someone to keep you company as you drink. In my case, anyway, who I am is unrecognizable to anyone, anywhere, my identity lays in limbo, as nothing I do or say will ever be retained or matter, it is the lowest and most common form of paid entertainment. The bartender.
I tell the patrons what I tell you now, " I wish I was at the door of a plane, checking for air traffic, looking down at the landing area with a parachute on my back, I wish I was skydiving. I wish I was driving through the night, making our way to the next gig, in a city we don't live in. I wish I was singing on stage. I wish I were swimming. I wish I were driving. I picture myself, when I was sixteen, chain smoking cigarettes, singing, driving, smoking. All Day Long. Dreaming of places like New York City. I remember my drive up to Hollister, CA two nights before my one way flight from LAX to JFK. My last AFF skydive. On my way up, I pulled over at a rest stop in the middle of the night, and in my moleskin notebook. I wrote, 'I hereby dedicate my life to love and adventure. Nothing else is worth a thing. I will settle for nothing else.'I completed my last AFF skydive, was congratulated by my mentors, the boys that taught me how to jump out of planes, we drank heavily and I woke the next morning for a 5 hour drive, I packed one suitcase and two backpacks and flew 5 hours to New York City. When I woke up in Stuyvesant Town the next day, before I opened my eyes, I felt so perfectly happy. Still, in my dreamlike state, it happened so fast. I thought I was still in Hollister, CA. I thought I had missed my flight."
That was two and a half years ago.
See now, something is tethering me to a force unnatural. And I lead myself here. How strange, my sense of direction is so rarely wrong, I see, I've been asleep too long. I miss having friends, I miss my other love. Adventure.
If I had my way, New York, I'd leave you right now, you dirty girl.
My laundry is done, I must retrieve it before I'm forced to walk into the familiar scene in which my neighbor is rearranging my panties and Chris's socks.
I'll sign off now with a song that I didn't write, but I swear was part of my DNA encoding in the womb:

"Babe, baby, baby, I'm Gonna Leave You.
I said baby, you know I'm gonna leave you.
I'll leave you when the summertime,
Leave you when the summer comes a-rollin'
Leave you when the summer comes along.
Baby, baby, I don't wanna leave you,
I ain't jokin' woman, I got to ramble.
Oh, yeah, baby, baby, I believin',
We really got to ramble.
I can hear it callin' me the way it used to do,
I can hear it callin' me back home!
Babe...I'm gonna leave you
Oh, baby, you know, I've really got to leave you
Oh I can hear it callin 'me
I said don't you hear it callin' me the way it used to do?
I know I never never never gonna leave your babe
But I got to go away from this place,
I've got to quit you, yeah
Baby, ooh don't you hear it callin' me?
Woman, woman, I know, I know
It feels good to have you back again
And I know that one day baby, it's really gonna grow, yes it is.
We gonna go walkin' through the park every day.
Come what may, every day
It was really, really good.
You made me happy every single day.
But now... I've got to go away!
Baby, baby, baby, baby
That's when it's callin' me
I said that's when it's callin' me back home..."
I said baby, you know I'm gonna leave you.

This One Doesn't Get A Title

Suddenly and violently I began to feel like a caged animal.
The Ugly walls staring at me, and bars over the only window.
I paced for weeks, going through exercises like a maniac and
Doing nothing else but sleep and eat.
Our brother said I was a witch and I didn't deny it.
It was confirmed I was crazy and I slept til 9pm the next night.
And upstairs the candles were still burning
Where I left them
I thought of what prisoners do and how I was like them.
Then I thought of how sick in a caged world that we must put more cages, for people, at that.
I cried for myself and I cried for the prisoners especially, because nobody likes criers in jail.
I tried to remember being high off of love, and I prayed frantically.
ever romantically I retreated to other worlds
Other dimensions
Where life was quite beautiful and strange and interesting.
Casually, I collected mermaid tails they'd shed and wash up on the shore.
I don't want to be here anymore.
This world is dumb and I'm alone.
Taunted by a million great things I know I'll have but just might never.
I thank God I won't be here forever.
I wonder seriously if I am some kind of blind.
Or just why this mortal world is so different from my mind.

Fashion Vicariously
A friend of mine majoring in Fashion Marketing once told me that Fashion designers dress like shit. I'm not a fashion designer per say, yet, but I'm currently getting my BA in Fashion Design. Though, I wasn't a bit bruised... more so flattered, I guess, that she thought it was okay to tell me this, like, my in cohesive ensembles were somehow forgivable to her immaculate sense of Fashion. And I bit my lip instead of telling her that her immaculate sense of Fashion was slightly offensive, so she could sleep right with her virtue.
The whole fashion world is hilarious. I think few people make sense of it... A conversation of preferences in fashion between a few fashion aficionados is like a Theology debate between Confucius, Britney Spears, Motley Crue, and God. Nobody is listening to one another, not even God. To study it seriously is difficult. It's the most abstract thing I've ever imagined getting involved in.
When I first started Fashion school, learning about many different designers, I selected John Galliano as my favorite designer for a project. I connected with his supposed irreverence to fashion and admired his talent a couturier... The next quarter I regretted even voicing my opinion as Galliano being my favorite designer, because he was no longer my favorite designer at all. I found his pieces to be overworked and imposed on themselves...despite my utmost respect for any designer in his position. Maybe he'll steal my heart again...who knows...next season, the next? Regardless, it's so silly so frivolous. All of my justifications for him as a master artist...out the window, on a whim. I still respect Galliano as a couturier but what I'm getting at is...it is now frustrating to me to see such effort so void of concept.
In a recent story on Yahoo News, I read "10 Things That Make Humans Unique" and I was glad to see that 'wearing clothes' made the list. It's an amazing freedom we have, we get to choose our skin...and if our own skin isn't good enough for us...then what is? As a designer, I don't know, I'm not well versed enough to have a unique aesthetic or an absolute style...but I can tell you this... to me, getting dressed is therapeutic.
I turned my miniature "one bedroom" apartment into a studio with a large closet. Because I love my clothes more than I love my bed. There are a handful of designer names that I got for a steal from leisurely trips consignment stores... loads of Betsey Johnson dresses that I collected while I worked there...but mostly you'll find an odd collection of sorts... different styles, seasons, sizes, gender implications and colors, garments that hang and lay together against the will of a meticulous fashionista.
See an XL DKNY button up that a boy that had a crush on me Sophomore year in high school used to wear EVERYDAY until he gave it me, we dated for three weeks and made out once. Six years later, it's on my back... at least twice a week.
There's an army-green sweatshirt, with no hood and only USMC and the USMC logo screenprinted small on the left-hand breast...ex-boyfriend, Junior year, loved him...when I was 17 I used it like a child does a blankie. I wear this all of the time and remember for a second I've forgiven him, even if he'll never know.
Most of my hats came from my Grandma, one she bought me when she was still alive when she took me shopping for my birthday, I was about 8, she isisted on getting me a hat, though I knew and she knew I wouldn't wear it...up until two years ago, I'd maybe worn it once. Every once in a while, I'll brave it...It's really a hat for a little girl in the nineties...so it makes conversation...I always get to tell how my Grandma picked it out for me.
An Abercrombie and Fitch Jacket, navy blue, marshamallow jacket, with a collar...no hood...my mom took me shopping for back-to-school clothes going into high school. I loved that jacket...it disappeared soon after I got it... (having an older sister around...these things happen) the jacket reappeared one day with two huge cigarette burn-holes in it that were definitely not from little 14 year old me...I wanted to kill my sister. She had it for some years after and recently I was pleasantly shocked to find it back in her closet... only for me to drag the thing back to San Diego.
"Are you really going to take that jacket back? That's kind of become a staple of mine" she says,
"Yesss, of course, I love this jacket," I tell her, removing it from the hanger. She looks at the jacket, sad, but comically adds... "I did a lot of drugs in that jacket", she smiles. I smile, "ha...I bet you did." Putting the jacket on, and fantasizing about all the drugs I might do in it before she steals it back again.
Should someone daresay, "Where did you get that shirt? I love it", and so on. I could tell them the story behind every garment I've pulled from my closet...I love getting dressed, there is absolute thought and a quiet virtue to what I wear. I create for myself an inner comfort...I'm reminding myself of images I can't see anymore. But people rarely pry, few girls at the magnanimously expensive fashion school I go to will admit to vying for my tattered "Support Your Local Strip Club" shirt, or my tacky hats from the nineties. Quiet and unpolished like the clothes on my back.I don't mind at all...It takes a keen eye to spot a one of a kind.
